Here comes the future bride and groom! After months of speculation, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal engagement is officially confirmed. The happy couple gave their first ever joint interview to the BBC, hours after their engagement was confirmed. I loved how they were smiling and giggling throughout their appearance. Kind of refreshing.
Contrary to some earlier reports, Prince Harry said he had never heard Meghan’s name and had never seen her the TV drama she stars in Suits. “I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her. There she was sitting there and I was like, ‘OK, well I’m going to have to up my game’,” he said. Harry, who met Meghan on a blind date after being matched by a friend, proposed to her at Nottingham Cottage on a standard typical night while they were roasting a chicken for dinner. Meghan said it was just an amazing surprise: “It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee.. I could barely let you finish proposing. I said ‘can I say yes now?”
Prince Harry designed the ring himself, using diamonds that belonged to his mother, Princess Diana. The two outside stones came from the late princess’s personal collection, with the centrepiece a large diamond from Botswana (the country holds special significance for both of them). The ring was made by Cleave and Company. “The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s her favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection to make sure that she’s with us on this – on this crazy journey together,” Harry said.
So what would Harry’s mum, princess Diana, have thought of Meghan? Prince Harry said: “Oh they’d be thick as thieves, without question, I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know, so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends – best friends with Meghan. It’s days like these when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news. But you know, with the ring and with everything else that’s going on, I’m sure she’s jumping up and down somewhere.”
And now to fashion. Meghan appeared for her first photocall as Harry’s fiancee in a white coat by the Canadian brand Line the Label, as well as a dress by Parosh. The shoes were by Aquazzura. News of their engagement came in a brief statement this morning, with the couple due to marry next spring. It is likely that once she marries Prince Harry, Meghan will be known as the Duchess of Sussex. Harry and Meghan will set up home in Nottingham Cottage, at Kensington Palace.
Well, whatever the future holds for them, I hope they do it their way.
