Up close: Enzo Angileri, the man behind Hollywood’s hair elite

If you haven’t heard his name then you’ll definitely have seen his work. Enzo Angileri is one of the most experienced hair stylist working in Hollywood today. His clientele are among the world’s most beautiful and talented men and women: Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Thandie Newton, Lucy Liu, Tom Cruise, and Nicole Kidman are just a few. Basically what this man can’t do with a pair of scissors and hair styling tools just isn’t worth knowing.

While his passion lies in editorial work, Enzo has achieved great success creating hairstyles for film and TV. He has won numerous prestigious awards including a Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Hairstyling” for Charlize Theron’s hair in The Life And Death of Peter Sellers, Guild Awards for “Best Hair” for Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair and the 2016 Guild Award for “Best Contemporary Hair” for Charlize Theron’s Christian Dior Commercial. Enzo has received many other nominations. You can see his most recent film work with Charlize Theron on The Fate of the Furious and Atomic Blonde.

I caught up with Enzo to find out everything from his inspiration to exclusive style tips:

What do you love most about your job?
Everything! I was 7 years old when I start my fascination with beauty…

Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?
Monica Vitti, Audrey Hepburn, my mom and my Sicilian family. But also fashion editorials, Vogue, art, people, observing, colours and Modigliani.

You regularly work with some of the most beautiful women in the world. How does that shape your definition of beauty?
Simplicity. Simple. Easy. Simple sophistication and glamour can all be achieved with a big dose of “simple and easy” and a lot of “shine”!

What’s a celebrity hair secret we might not know about but should?
The use of a mask to recover colour treated hair is for sure a good choice – restore as much as possible, the hair structure is key.

What are the trendiest styles in Hollywood right now?
In my opinion, there is really no trends for me to follow without the risk of falling into ordinary. So, the all book of styles and possibilities are there to work with, without limits. In doing that, we involuntarily create trends sometimes. I tend to do what’s appropriate, what works best with the fashion (dress) by using all I know – my tools and my knowledge.

You often work with Charlize Theron. She is such a beautiful woman and everything looks great on her. What is all time favourite red carpet beauty moment from her?
I really like every magazine cover and any picture in general of red carpet event. Charlize is a true beauty in a classic way; I call it the “Kim Novak way” and yes, that’s the one movie star of the past that I have reach out for inspiration.

How do you achieve a red carpet hairstyle at home? Any easy and quick tip?
A well-defined part, middle or side it’s a personal choice, then sleek and shine hair tight in a ponytail a low or high bun. Something that you feel in control all time. As for the tip: Less-is-more! For sure it’s the best thing to do if you don’t have a hairstylist helping, and at times even if you do. Lol!

Any favourite hair products you swear by?
There is a few products that are in my kit at all time: a mousse, a light hairspray and a shine liquid.

And lastly, what is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?
Don’t change your look to often. Find one that works for you.
Establish a relationship with the person that cuts your hair. Don’t get a haircut by a different person every time. It’s like starting from zero all over again.
Stay in the parameters of who you are.
